Best Day Trips from Johor Bahru (Desaru, Kukup & more)
The best day trips from Johor Bahru in 2026 — Desaru Coast beaches, Kukup stilt-house seafood, Tanjung Piai mangroves, Kota Tinggi waterfalls and more, with driving times.
One of the underrated things about living in or visiting JB is what’s within a couple of hours’ drive. Beaches, fishing villages, mangroves, waterfalls and fruit farms all sit close enough for a day out. The catch is transport — public options to most of these are thin, so you’ll want to drive or join a tour. Here’s where I’d actually go, with honest driving times and which ones are worth an overnight instead.
For the city itself, start at our Johor Bahru explore hub.
Desaru Coast — the beach day (or weekend)
About 90 minutes east on the coast, Desaru is the region’s main beach escape: a long sandy stretch, several resorts and the Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark, the largest in the area. There’s also the Desaru Fruit Farm — 180 acres of tropical fruit plus a petting zoo with camels and ostriches, good for kids.
Honest take: Desaru is doable as a long day trip, but it shines as an overnight. By the time you drive out, do the water park or beach, and drive back, a day feels rushed. Stay one night and it’s a proper little holiday. Resorts run from mid-range to genuinely high-end.

Kukup — stilt houses and seafood
Southwest of JB, around an hour out, Kukup is a fishing village built largely on stilts over the water. People come for one thing above all: seafood, eaten fresh at the kelong-style restaurants over the sea. It’s one of the more culturally interesting trips near JB — walk the wooden village, watch the boats, eat well, and head back. A classic half-day for food lovers.
Tanjung Piai — the southern tip of mainland Asia
Right next to Kukup, Tanjung Piai National Park marks the southernmost point of continental Asia. The draw is the mangrove boardwalks reaching out over the mudflats, with a marker where you’re standing at the tip of the continent. It pairs perfectly with a Kukup seafood lunch — most people do both in one outing. Easy walking, great photos, calm pace.

Kota Tinggi — waterfalls and old Johor
About an hour northeast, Kota Tinggi is best known for its waterfalls — a popular spot to cool off in the river pools, busy on weekends. The town also carries a lot of old Johor history if you’re the type to poke around. Good for a morning swim and a kampung lunch before heading back.
Gunung Pulai — forest and a waterfall, close in
Only 45 minutes out near Kulai, Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest is the easiest nature day trip: shaded trails, a reservoir and a small waterfall, with a 654m peak for those who want the climb. Closest of the lot, and a good option when you don’t want a long drive. More in our parks and nature guide.

Practical tips
- Drive or tour. Public transport to these is limited and slow. A car gives you the freedom these trips need — see why a car matters in our moving to Johor Bahru guide.
- Pair the close ones. Kukup plus Tanjung Piai is the obvious combo; both are in the same southwest corner.
- Start early. Beat the heat and the weekend crowds, especially at the waterfalls and Desaru.
- Carry cash. Village restaurants, small park entries and parking are often cash-only.
- Watch the weather. Afternoon storms can turn waterfall pools and beaches unpleasant fast.
Wondering whether a JB base is worth all this access? Our cost of living in Johor Bahru breakdown and the city’s own things to do make the case for staying put as much as for the drives out.
That’s the quiet luxury of JB: a beach, a fishing village, a mangrove walk and a waterfall, all inside a tank of fuel. Pick one, leave early, and you’ve got a great day.
