The Best Things to Do in Johor Bahru (2026)
A local's rundown of the best things to do in Johor Bahru in 2026 — theme parks, hawker food, the old town, the waterfront, malls and easy day trips.
People used to drive through Johor Bahru, fill the tank, grab cheap groceries and head back across the causeway. That JB is gone. The city has theme parks, a hawker scene that holds its own against anywhere in the country, big polished malls and a waterfront that has had serious money poured into it. I live here, and I still find new corners. Here is how I’d spend your time, whether you’ve just moved over or you’re crossing the border for the day.
If you want the broader picture of the area first, start at our Johor Bahru explore hub.
Start with LEGOLAND if you have kids
LEGOLAND Malaysia in Iskandar Puteri is still the headline attraction, and the 2026 reason to go is the new MINILAND Singapore build — Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion and Gardens by the Bay recreated in over a million LEGO bricks. The resort bundles a theme park, a water park and a SEA LIFE aquarium, so you can spread it across a full day.
Standard one-day park tickets run around RM199 for adults and RM169 for kids as of 2026, but I never pay that. Buy online ahead of time through Klook or Traveloka and you’ll routinely find it 20–30% cheaper. Go on a weekday if you can.

Eat your way through the city
If you ask me what JB does best, it’s food, and it costs a fraction of what the same meal does across the water.
- Old town kopitiam — the streets around Jalan Tan Hiok Nee are the heart of it: kaya toast, kopi, breakfast done the same way for generations.
- Mount Austin — JB’s modern food belt. Bak kut teh, seafood, Korean, Japanese, dessert cafés, supper spots open late. This is where locals actually go.
- Pasar malam — the night markets rotate through neighbourhoods on set evenings. Cheap, loud, excellent. Worth timing a visit around one.
A full hawker breakfast for two here can come in under RM30. That alone is worth the crossing for a lot of Singaporeans.
Wander the old town
JB’s history actually lives in the old town, and it rewards walking over driving.
- Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Street — restored shophouses, cafés, curiosity shops, and a small but real street-art scene in the back alleys near Masjid India.
- Chinese Heritage Museum — a four-storey shophouse museum on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee covering the early Chinese settlement of JB.
- Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple — a Hindu temple covered entirely in glass mosaic, a five-minute walk from the old Chinese temple. Genuinely unlike anything else in the city.

The waterfront, for an easy evening
JB’s waterfront is where you end a day, not build one around it.
- Danga Bay — a long, relaxed stretch with seafood, open space and good sunset views. The biggest recreational waterfront in the area.
- Puteri Harbour — a marina-side development in Iskandar Puteri with restaurants and a more planned, polished feel.
Shop like a local
Shopping is the classic day-trip reason, and JB delivers.
- Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) — branded fashion at outlet prices, off the highway towards Kulai.
- KSL City Mall — about ten minutes from the checkpoint, huge, with a SOGO and a big BookXcess.
- Mid Valley Southkey — the upscale option, with luxury brands and a cinema.
- Toppen / AEON Tebrau / IKEA — clustered together for a one-stop family run.

Get out of the city
When you want air, you don’t have to go far.
- Gunung Pulai near Kulai — a forest reserve with a reservoir, shaded trails and a small waterfall, about 45 minutes out.
- Kukup — a stilt-house fishing village famous for seafood, southwest of the city.
- Desaru Coast — a proper beach resort strip about 90 minutes east, with an adventure water park. Better as an overnight than a rushed day trip.

A few honest pointers
- Drive if you can. JB is car-dependent and the good stuff is spread out. Our moving to Johor Bahru guide explains why a car is close to essential here.
- Avoid peak crossing times. If you’re coming from Singapore, early out and early back beats sitting on the causeway.
- Pace it. One theme park or one shopping run plus a great meal makes a better day than a packed checklist.
Curious what daily life actually costs once the novelty wears off? Our cost of living in Johor Bahru breakdown has the real numbers.
JB isn’t a postcard city. It’s a working, eating, sprawling place that rewards people who slow down and follow their nose. Do that, and it’s hard not to enjoy.
